Since the afternoon of 21st Feb 2018 the TISS students have occupied the TISS main gate and are sitting on dharna. It’s now more than 48 hours that the students are agitating against the TISS Administration to fufill their just demands. Posters are being displayed at the main gate which contain progressive slogans. A chair has been set-up and huge stones are kept on the chair representing the silent and stone hearted TISS Administration. Spark – Voice of Youth salutes the fighting spirit of the TISS students and admires their determination. After a long discussion on 22nd Feb evening between 20 student delegates and Administration, the complete demands of the students were not met. Only the waiver of hostel and dining fees for the 2016-18 batch were agreed and hence the students decided to continue the strike indefinitely. The General Secretary of the Student Union told Spark correspondents that he is ready to sit on a hunger strike if the need arises. On Friday 23rd Feb the Teachers’ Association of TISS extended full support to the striking students. The TISS SC-ST Employees Union also extended their support to the students. Various points came to light while discussing with many students. The institute has spent around Rs. 25 crore to organise workshops last year. A 30 floor building is being built as the economic studies complex but the institute does not have 3-4 crores which are needed to sustain the education of the students. The question is, what kind of a campus in the future will TISS be if one of the most opressed sections of the society is even denied entry to the institute ?. How is this is in line with the vision of TISS ” Re-imagining the Future”?
