Attractive headlines of equal status for women, measures taken for ensuring safety of women are advertised, while the fact remains that they are just words. The reality is terribly dreadful.
106 rapes have been reported per day in 2016. So you can imagine the actual figure by adding up unreported cases.
An absolute and abysmal shame that nearly 50% of our population, women, are living in fear with crimes against them increasing. But what are we supposed to do when people in positions of power use and abuse their power?
In August 2019, a 23-year-old law student of a Shahjahanpur college, alleged in a Facebook video that she was being exploited by powerful people. She urged PM Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath to help her. The video went viral..!!!
Seeing the outrage of people, the former BJP MP Swami Chinmayanand was booked for kidnapping and criminal intimidation.
This is the very same Chinmayanand who is…
…the president of the managing committee of Shahjahanpur’s Swami Shukdevanand Postgraduate College, where the woman, who accused him of sexual harassment, studied.
Chinmayanand was a Union minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government (1999-2004). He was a member of the Lok Sabha from Jaunpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh during that period. He has an ashram in Shahjahanpur and runs five colleges in the town. He also has ashrams in Haridwar and Rishikesh.
This is not the first time he has been accused of such heinous criminal activity..!
In 2011, he had been accused of rape by an inmate of his ashram
In the video the woman said, “A big leader of the Sant Samaj who has destroyed the lives of many other girls and also has threatened to kill me… I want to request Yogi ji and Modi ji to help me. He has threatened to kill my family. Please help me,”
She met Chinmayanand for admission at his college following which he arranged for it and gave her a job in the library and asked her to move into the hostel.
He filmed her while she was taking a shower and used it to blackmail her!!!
She told in an interview that 6 am was reserved for naked massages and 2:30 pm for “forced sex”. This was done under the fear of his gunmen who would then drop her back.
The law student said she wanted to file the rape complaint earlier, but the UP Police turned her down. The woman said she had evidence against him and alleged that he kept the district magistrate and superintendent of police “in his pockets”.
The police force is a machinery of the State whose responsibility is to protect the people. But the question is which people are they really protecting?
It is starkly clear that it is always the people in power in whose interests everything is being done.
How do you think Chinmayand reacted ?
Chinmayanand said he was being framed and alleged that the woman was part of a conspiracy against him and it was an attempt to malign the Yogi Adityanath government….! Can you believe that?
How did the judiciary react to this?
Both the woman and Chinmayanand were arrested!!!
How outrageously unfair is this law enforcement?
What kind of justice can we expect? Can we expect it to work for our people or the people in power?
Women are raped daily and looked at with suspicion after that when they complain. What kind of a society are we living in?
This crime is a direct attack on all the people of our country as it shows the anti – people nature of the State. We must come together and collectively condemn this serious injustice against not only the woman but all the other cases that take place daily and are cleverly hidden from the people.
